| Description |
A lyric comedy based on Maori legend. It draws on the legend of the Patu-Paiarehe - fair-skinned, red-haired, blue-eyed people. Written for radio around 1947. Campion was working with a largely inexperienced Maori cast. Douglas Stewart strikes an idiom somewhere between the Song of Solomon and Alfred Domett's Ranolf and Amohia, redeemed by wit, some crisp comedy and appropriately earthy imagery. Ranolf and Amohia was a poem written in 1872, which generated some press attention for its description of 'pig-sticking'. See items on the poem listed below. |
