Description Renée's perspective is sympathetic to the workers fighting the Holland National government of the day. For this reason the political figures, patrolling police and compliant editors take on the two-dimensional character of 'the enemy' rather than enriching the dramatic conflict through genuine clashes of characters and debate. But RenŽe's consistent humanism and increasingly imaginative technical skill as a playwright ensure that the drama remains quite tautly balanced, without being maudlin.
