Description This Other Eden is the story of Thomas Kendall, a missionary sent to New Zealand by Samuel Marsden, and the first European to have a deep understanding of the Maori language. Kendall was befriended by Hongi Hika a Nga Puhi chief and became so enamoured of Maori culture in the course of the compilation of the first Maori-English dictionary that he deserted his European wife and ways and went to live with the people of the land. Ultimately, he was rejected by both worlds.
