Mont Albert Choral Society produced its first operetta in 1943. In 1944 they set up the Youth operatic Society which became The Hawthorn Operatic Society in 1952 and Victorian Light Opera in 1961. A split occurred in 1964 resulting in The Victorian Opera Company which became Victoria State Opera in 1977 while those who wanted to perform only G & S formed Savoy Opera.
