| Description |
The Mr Marsden of the title is the same Samuel Marsden who has always occupied a very honoured place in New Zealand history for his work in converting the Maoris to Christianity. In this play however, we see the other side of the coin - Marsden as a man and magistrate rather than benevolent missionary. Based upon historical fact, it shows the conditions in the penal colony in New South Wales were severe but some magistrates tempered their justice with mercy. |
