| Description |
According to the myth, drawn predominantly from Homer's The Iliad, the warrior Ajax, famous for his strength and power within the Greek Army and second only to the demi-god Achilles, commanded a twelve strong fleet of ships against Troy in the Trojan War. After the death of Achilles both Ajax and Odysseus stepped forward to receive the fallen hero's armour. Agamemnon granted it to his adversary, Odysseus. The gesture so enraged Ajax that he was driven mad and slaughtered the Army's cattle and sheep along with their guards, before killing himself out of shame for his actions.
