“One of the wonders of civilisation is the manner in which happiness may be encompassed for the afflicted. To see the blind students of the Queensland Musical, Literary, and Self-Aid Society for the Blind playing and singing through their concert programme, at the Albert Hall, one could hardly think there was anything abnormal about it all. The performers bowed and smiled, and accepted the tributes of flowers with perfect grace. There was, too, a general atmosphere of optimism. The president of the society, Introducing the Lord Mayor (Alderman W. A. Jolly, C.M.G.), spoke of the hopes of the society in the direction of erecting a new building. What they would like would cost £10,000, of which they had £2500 in hand. And the Lord Mayor eulogised the work of the society, and gave encouragement all round.” |
