					| Description |
“The celebration which was held in the Town-hall last night for the purpose of bringing under public notice the necessity of founding a suitable institution for the adult deaf and dumb of Victoria was in every way a pronounced success. […] Between the addresses exhibitions of the methods of deaf mute communication were given by the students. An interesting exhibition of living statuary was provided by the lady entertainers, while some lightning sketches in black and white were drawn by Mr. J. A. Jenney, and some clever manipulation of plain paper into a variety of patterns was shown by Mr. Leslie Downs. Mr. J. E. Muir recited "The Village Blacksmith" in such a way that the familiar lines could be easily followed by all. The lighter side of the entertainment was contributed by Mr. J. Patterson, who gave some illustrations of humour in the language of gesture.” |
