| Description | “An audience that filled the Institute Hall assembled last night to enjoy the entertainment given by a company of deaf, dumb, and blind entertainers from Victoria. The company, which is a very clever one is under the management of Mr. W. W. Spicer. When Messrs. A. Solomon and J. Irwin had played "The Washington Post" as an overture, on the pianoforte, an exhibition was given of the various systems by which the deaf and dumb converse with each other. This caused intense interest. The most surprising system is unquestionably the oral. By it the deaf are taught to imitate the movement of their instructor's lips, and produce the proper sounds of words.” | |
