Description "This performance paper aims to present some issues connected with doing research in northern Australia where conflicts intensify around natural sites like Purnululu (The Bungle Bungle), now firmly on the tourist agenda. At this complex intertextual site, discourses of tourism, conservation and management have jostled aside traditional Aboriginal stories about the place.

This paper is about stories of places which never fully belong to a place, the accumulation of words and capital around a spectacular landscape where the signs have been eroded right down to a quiet fossil murmur - nothing to be heard there except the birds and the weather, at least until the explosion of four-wheel-drives and helicopters. How, in all this, did Bonnie's story get to be told, the story she didn't really want to tell?"
