Description |
The play's tragic force is strong, and yet it is hardly a work of full tragic stature. Anouilh understands the grandeur, serenity, and inevitability of his ancient Greek models, but there are elements of un-Olympian weakness in his touches of tinted sentiment and his inclination to approach the theme as a taster of exquisite pains. The play is bound to be all the more popular for that, and for its shrewd and expert modern wit. |
