Description "BEATRICE, receiving its premiere at The Traverse, is set in the bitterly divided community of Montaillou in the middle of the Pyrenees, one of the last strongholds of the Cathers [sic], a Christian sect deemed heretical by the Inquisition. The story of Beatrice de Planissoles who, as the Inquisition tightened its grip, stood her ground against the power of the Church and torture by the Inquisition is an account of an extraordinary life. Arriving in the 20th Century by a devious route which started with the Inquisition's own records, BEATRICE is a shaft of light into the emotional life of a whole community. Beatrice - wife, mother, mistress and heretic - speaks clearly across the centuries, outspoken, irreverent and full of humour even in her darkest hour."

Beatrice was the first production of Monstrous Regiment's new 1989 season that consisted of plays both by and about European women of the past and present.
