Description "Alarms is a surreal thriller that swoops into the world of myth and settles on the post-Chernobyl irradiated landscape of the twentieth century. Somewhere in the corridors of power there is an unmarked door, behind which the sinister Mr. Deal organises his campaign of terror, intrigue and mis-information. He will stop at nothing to silence Dr. C. whose apocalyptic vision of the effects of radiation is proving disruptive. Her professional standing as an obstetrician lends weight to her impassioned speeches, but, like Cassandra, she becomes increasingly isolated, and to some, she is the unacceptable voice - 'A woman sounding the alarm before the fire'."

The 1987 Monstrous Regiment season highlighted two leading American women writers. Alarms was a new commission written especially for the company by Susan Yankowitz.
