Description Quite possibly the most popular film to come out of the silent era, The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney was billed in 1925 as "Universal's million dollar super jewel production". It has frequently been regarded as one of the greatest American horror films of all time, and the very best of the many adaptations of Gaston Leroux's 1911 literary work which went on to inspire the popular musical of the same name.
