Description We meet old Sam Craddock, a widower, trying to eke out an existence on a farm in the low rainfall area. This has made him cunning, tight-fisted to the point of meanness, but always hoping that perhaps two good seasons in succession will straighten things out. Martha, whose mother died when she was fourteen, is the mainstay of the farm and has had no time for the more gentle and feminine things in life. When love or pity is shown her it is an alien emotion and she has no idea how to handle it and so reacts violently. Johnny, the dingo-trapper, becomes the trapped and cannot escape.
