Description |
The entertainment provided for playgoers at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night consisted of a comedy by Robertson and comic songs by Rickards. "Society" and "Rorty Tom" were placed upon the boards together. We have already expressed our opinion of Mr. Rickards, He is a clever comic vocalist, and in his proper place is to be admired. His proper place, however, is a concert-hall, not the stage of the leading theatre in the colonies. That class of amusement of which Mr. Harry Rickards may be taken as the Australian manifestation, is admitted to be now ruining the English drama. It prevents the education of actors, it lowers acting as a profession, and it is itself one of the lowest and vulgarest forms of dramatic art. At the same time "Rorty Tom" and " Artful Joe" draw money, and so, of course, thero is nothing more to be said. |
