Notes Died in 1902. 'English mail advices report the death of Mrs Arthur Sterling, an actress once famous in the colonies. It was as Miss Cleveland that she toured New Zealand early in the sixties — so long ago that to most of the present generation her name will be the sole memory. But in her day she played many characters with all the passion and subtlety of a finished artist, and there are still grey-headed playgoers who enthuse over her 'Leah the Forsaken' and her Shakespearian portraitures as exhibiting powers akin to genius.' (Observer [Auckland], Volume XXIII, Issue 16, 3 January 1903, Page 4) Her first husband was Charles Vincent, with whom she toured Australia/New Zealand in the 1860s,. 'Miss Cleveland, the young and talented actress from the London boards, whose [Melbourne] debut.[took] place at the Royal has quite taken the town by storm. On the first night of the performance of 'Leah' there was a tremendous rush to the house, boxes, pit and gallery were alike crowded, and the verdict of one of the largest audiences ever assembled in a Melbourne Theatre was unanimously given in favor of the new actress. The naturalness of her acting - the expression of deep emotion without rant by which her impersonation of the loving, heart-broken and half maddened Jewess was characterised, fairly carried away the audience, and brought tears into the eyes of many a stout hearted man present, while the effect on the female portion of the audience may be easily imagined. In a word, the debut of Miss Cleveland was a great success, and if that lady sustain in other characters the reputation which she has gained in that of 'Leah the forsaken', she cannot fail to establish herself in public favor as the best actress that has ever graced the Melbourne stage.' (Melbourne 5 March, from the Daily Times correspondent, Otago Witness , Issue 642, 19 March 1864, Page 21) 'Miss Cleveland, acknowledged by Mr and Mrs Charles Kean to be the greatest living tragic actress.' (Daily Southern Cross, Volume XXI, Issue 2331, 9 January 1865, Page 1) She evidently played the part of Hamlet in Melbourne.
