First Date 1850
Notes In 1954 Hexham Public School had a total enrolment of only 56 pupils and raised £54 at its annual continental. The school, one of the oldest in NSW., was opened in 1850. There were then only 24 other schools in operation under the control of the Board of National Education which had been established in 1848. The first teacher was Mr Irvine Coulter, but this school seems to have closed early in 1856 but opened again in 1863, as the result of an application signed on behalf of the residents by Messrs James McMichael, S Campbell, Thomas McMillan and the Rev W Chaucer and recommended by the Inspector of Schools (Mr E Johnson). In 1883 a new school building and teachers residence were erected on a site resumed from Mrs Christie. Builder was Mr J Frogley and construction cost £1595. In 1922 it was decided to erect a new building. This building, which was occupied in the early part of 1925, was within the limit of the flood danger zone and the school was subsequently raised on high brick piers, the flooring being 10ft 6in above the ground level. A weatherboard building of three classrooms was erected at a cost of £2550..The site is now used by a transport company.
