| Abstract/Description |
She is a poet-performer who has lived in Samoa, Australia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East as well as New Zealand. A graduate of Bill Manhire's MA writing course, she has also been mentored by Hone Kouka and the Writers' Block, and supported as a performer by Meshelle Maugututia, Tanea Heke and her manager-director Jamie Bull.
As evidenced by her 50-minute solo performance Wild Dogs Under My Skirt (also the title of her forthcoming book of poetry to be published next March by VUP), the outward journey has clearly taken Tusiata Avia to the centre of herself and given her a delightful yet profound capacity to share the total spectrum of her being.
With a gentle strength and fluid grace she paints vivid word pictures, offers amusing observations and insights and captures intense emotional moments in her timeless experience as a woman, Samoan, New Zealander and citizen of the world. The plastic flowers and doilies might be harmless fun but the show also has the cutting edge of her very real machete.
Wild Dogs Under My Skirt is a must-see show when it comes your way. |
