Title Four Plays by Youth Theatre

Abstract/Description Two comedies, a fantasy and a drama made up a programme of one-act plays presented by the Australian Youth Theatre at 2KY Radiotorium. The youthful producer. Brian Barrie took a leading part in all but one of these four short offerings. The programme opened with Eileen Kramer's Off Stage, a light comedy sketch covering a frivolous love affair told through the characters of a playwright, a radio announcer and two actresses. This was followed by the most enter taining play of the evening, John St. Paul's Elmer, a more substantial comedy of domestic affairs. Stan Paul in the title role gave the best performance with Jane Holland, as Susan, lending strong support. Gail Francis and Annette Keerton were other players who stood out in the cast of ten. The Maker of Dreams, a fantasy by Oliphant Downs, followed with a poetic love story about a Pierot and a Pierette. Brian Barrie as the egotistic Pierot was not sure or his part, which kept the prompter busy. Jane Holland made quite an engaging Pierette, spritely, tender and very much in love The title role was competently managed by Louis de Courcy. The final offering was Act III from Noel Coward's ultra-sophisticated The Vortex. The act deals with a mother and her son in the usual NoelCoward bedroom sequence, each wearing a dressing gown and each indulging in the confessions of Coward characters. Brian Barrie did well as the overwrought Nicky, drowning in his own tears of self pity, but Gail Francis was not so successful as his highly emotional mother.
