HOBART TOWN THEATRE.
Since the bold and enterprising attempt of Mr. Cameron, to introduce the rational amusement of dramatic representations in Van Diemen's Land, has been in progress, a very considerable degree of public speculation has been excited. Some, and among others ourselves, had sad mis-givings as to the result. We thought in so short a time, so respectable, a company
could not have been formed—that with such limited means, as respects scenery and stage room, to get up a piece even
tolerably, would have been morally impossible.—
The play selected, too, for the opening piece, added in no small degree to our doubts and fears of a failure ; but on Tuesday last, however, were our expectations falsified! On entering the room,
we were struck with the neatness and elegance of the proscenium, the work of Mr. Shribs ( who has been also one of the scene painters), the perfect order in which the seats were arranged, and the general really theatrical appearance of the room. Everything was in character, even to the foot lights. On the rise of the curtain, one simultaneous burst of applause followed, which we must say was well merited. The piece was the Stranger (somewhat curtailed), cast as follows :
The Stranger, Mr. Cameron ,
Count Wintersen, Mr. Jordan;
the Baron, Mr. Taylor;
Solomon, and Tabias, doubled, by Mr. Jacobs ;
Francis, Mr. Fenton ;
Peter, Mr Lewis ;
Mrs. Haller, Mrs. Cameron ;
Countess Wintersen, Mrs. Brown;
Charlotte, with Annett's song, Mrs. Taylor. |
