| Abstract/Description |
On Friday evening, we went to see Othello, or the Moor of Venice. A rather thin audience was present, but it was a very good humoured one, and received the exertions of the performers with loud plaudits. Upon the whole, the performance was more
than respectable, but dissect, and the charm vanishes. Mrs. Cameron's Desdemona, we did not like, it so well as many of her other characters. In the bed scene especially, she was surely half asleep. None of her usual fire and emotion, none of those beautiful touches of pathos we have been wont to admire, were to be seen. Mr. Cameron's Iago
was the best played character in the piece, his performance was good — better than usual; but he did not look the character. Spencer's Othello was better conceived than played— his passion was very good; but his attitudes exceedingly awkward and displeasing to the classic eye. His figure too is against him, not
being sufficiently athletic for ' the moor.' This gentleman should correct that abominable swagger in his gait, which gives
him the appearence of too great self sufficiency. |
