The Australian Theatre |
| Abstract/Description |
[includes a sketch of the theatre]
The New Australia Theatre opens in Newtown with a special premiere night
on November 5, supported by eminent actors like Barrie Ingham, Gordon Chater, Ron Haddrick, Ruth Cracknell, Ben Gabriel, June Collis, Don Reid and
others. It will be the first permanent national home for Australian playwrights: intended as a showcase for Australian drama, a flow-on theatre for the best tried out elsewhere. This theatre project arose from the work of the Mews Playhouse, a try-out theatre in Centennial Park where new plays have been performed for two years past by professional actors and directors in rehearsed readings. The shortage of venues for continuous production for Australian plays became obvious. |
