The Capitol is the oldest theatre building in New South Wales; as a theatre it was constructed from the Belmore Market Building from 1914-1916; internal alterations and remodelling of 1928 concerted it to the first of four American style 'atmospheric' picture palaces in Australia; what are the options for retention and re-use of the Capitol as a live theatre; accomodation for audience and performers can be improved; the cost of restoring and adding to an existing theatre is significantly less that demolishing and rebuilding a new theatre. |
