Title 2001 Great Moscow Circus in Hong Kong
Abstract/Description Opening parade of company. Tape says event highlights – magic and acrobats. At the moment it’s looking like it might be a whole show – but doesn’t match the programme in the publicity material from 2000. Parade; followed by Flying troupe – has a Yuri someone in it. They are announcing the names but I can’t make them out. Clowns. Motorbike acrobatics – This is the Elena Kuskova troupe of foot jugglers on motorbikes. Children being juggled. Motorbikes are stationary. Skipping ropes “The biggest skipping rope in the world”. Then some girly top hat dancing to “Life is a cabaret” - not in programme – little show girl moment. Then couple waltzing to Strauss – as intro to corde lisse –This is the crazy dog and web act - I love that dog! It’s Volovoyev and Kalachev – same act as on MOSC3B.5. Not in programme. Then liberty horses – with female trainer – Elizabeth Gasser? Big horse and little pony. (There is a live band for this playing the same horrid bland jazzy music for this act.) Clown with hoop moment and audience participation (small child – who does hoop quite well – then other children while the net is set up for flying act). Is this one of the Gurovs? – cross-matched against another tape appears it is the Gurovs. Flying act with very bouncy net – trampoline and aerial mix - this could be the Zverev’s trapeze trampoline act – as seen also in Torvill and Dean’s tour in 1991. Some girls dancing to Ravel – suspect from the large box they are surrounding that this is the magic and illusion act. Johnny Alexander? He magics a puma out of the box and then leads it around. Apparently he’s going to do this with a tiger, according to the programme. (Is the music recorded for this segment? It’s a song I recognize - his movements are quite choreographed to the song). Produces girls from box, pops girls back into box, sets box on fire – and, hey presto, girl turns into a little leopard (it’s very little – programme says “prowling leopard” though it doesn’t so much prowl as gambol). Smashing! Cuts girl in half, puts girl back together. Yes, there is a tiger! Hand balancers – the Beliakov’s - father and son. More liberty horses (4) with male trainer (another Gasser?) Gurov clown interlude - frying pan and big ears (also on MOSC18.10). Performing dogs (Yulia Yakubovskaya and a bloke); more Gurovs platespinning. The Pouzanov stilt and teeter board acrobats. Twelve men and a girl (version of Orchi Chorniya from band – jazzy Russian music – yes, there’s “Kalinka” now and more bits of Orchi). Final artist parade.
