Title Rosgocirk
Abstract/Description Tape just says Rosgocirk. Begins with footage from red square – logs of brightly coloured costumed performers, brass band – looks like a gala event of some sort – cars drawing up. Three-high from the brightly costumed performers. I’m intrigued. Some speeches – then reveals an outdoor ring with large Egyptian statues and Egyptian costumes – and a mandrill. Then more mandrills. Then cut to bicycle troupe. And setting has changed – backdrop sort of Asiatic. Still outdoor event. There are lots of circus rings with backdrops in the same square from brief aerial shot. Big outdoor circus festival. Cut to another ring and backdrop – Islamic/Samarkand style and a ladder and pyramid balancing act. Circus troupes from round USSR perhaps? Have to get a Russian to interpret this. Russian bar. Shot of web hung from balloon type thing. Now backdrop is vaguely Aztec so my previous theory is probably wrong. Young boys and young girl and woman doing rollabolla. More Russian commentary from presenter wandering round venue. Now backdrop is classical architecture. . There are occasional aerial shots, which show you the other rings performing simultaneously. Illusion act. And on it goes – Roman forum with togas. There is a Russian Circus Festival held in September in Red Square - so presume this is it. I’m amazed at the elaborate sets. There’s some brief footage of an act with cheetahs. Or are they leopards? Then some exterior shots, and then moves into an evening performance in tent. Some hand balancers in zebra costumes. There is a man doing balance contortion in a pyramid type structure which I think I’ve seen somewhere else (Could be 3B.3?) Yes it is, Alexander Chainikov - SA tour 2006? Male hula-hooper. Tape goes to black. This tape came from a box of reference tapes for 2006 tour.
