| Abstract/Description | Hugh Hastings, who has died aged 87, made theatre history with his one hit, the naval comedy Seagulls Over Sorrento. It opened at London's Apollo Theatre in 1950 and ran for 1,551 performances; only two plays had then run longer - Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit and the army comedy, Worm's Eye View. Hastings made a fortune, which grew to £100,000 when the Boulting Brothers film version was made in 1954. | |
