Verse Drama. Success of Winterset. |
| Abstract/Description |
The literary, poetic and philosophical qualities of Maxwell Anderson's verse drama, "Winterset," place it in the category of tragedy drama, notwithstanding the intensely melodramatic theme which forms its basis. Although it finds an honoured position among modern plays, its production is both courageous and ambitious, for it makes a direct appeal to the intelligence and imagination rather than to the emotions. The fine lines put into the mouths of some of the characters may at times savour of unreality but this does not lessen their value. |
