Description This is an extremely good satire on high finance, written in the true Priestley style - and not without its sting or two at the 'upper classes.' The play is woven around an affable night porter, William Lotless (Brian Grosvenor) and a friendly chambermaid, Molly Cudden (Marion Henry), who are employed at an extremely conservative and snobbish hotel. William, a once successful speculator on the stock market, accepts the role of night porter philosophically after serving a jail sentence for unethical stock dealings, but his gambling instincts are aroused when Molly shows him some controlling shares she has inherited. He at once begins to amass a large fortune for her, but with his acquisition of power his lovable character rapidly degenerates much to Molly's dismay. Priestley never misses an opportunity to moralise on the evils of money power when in individual hands, and also to jibe at the aristocracy - "the half-dead, served by the living."
