Rita is 26 and has been a hairdresser since leaving school in her teens. She's married to a man who insists on controlling her life. He's against her trying to improve her education and do more with her life. Frank, by contrast, is well-educated and a university lecturer but has coasted along. He showed talent as a poet early in life but now that he's in his 50s he's lost confidence in his abilities and keeps a supply of whiskey bottles hidden behind the books in his university room.
