Description |
On an Arcadian landscape a gathering of fairs lament the loss of Jolanthe, banished from Fairyland for having married a mortal. They impose on the fairy queen to allow Jolanth to return from the bottom of the stream to be near her son Strephon. Strephon is in love with Phyllis, a ward in chancery but his romance is being thwarted by the lord chancellor. The house of lords also seeks the hand of Phyllis, who at first refuses, but when she sees Strephon talking to a young lady she accepts the proposal of two leading lords.
