Further Information Programme note: To the best of our knowledge, the Goodwin Marionette Theatre is the first permanent company in New Zealand to devote itself entirely to the perfection of the Puppet Stage. Started some eight years ago at the beginning of the war, the theatre has already achieved considerable success and received favourable criticism. Travelling throughout the country during the war years the company has played to Army, Navy and Air Force stations - to schools and wherever an interest in the living theatre has been expressed. New Zealand, despite her interest in the drama. still awaits a National Theatre which will give a lead and do justice to her many talented amateur societies and artists. A theatre movement cannot be built without an audience. A lively Theatre demands a lively and critical audience. South Island Tour. Performances included: 1. Examples of Traditional Puppetry; 2. The Reluctant Dragon, from the story bay Kenneth Grahame, dramatised by Lord HOward de Walden; 3. The Tempest.
