,,,[Sheridan] dressed the part well, wearing an auburn wig, and delivered the text with much point, though in the first act his monotonous style weakened the bitterness of his sarcasm, and in the later scenes lessened the emphasis that might well have been given. The soliloquy, 'To be or not to be,' was spoken with eyes downcast, and made to be a real self-communing. The advice to the players was quietly spoken, but the speaker more than once forgot to apply the advice in his own case; for in the closet scene, and at the end of the play scene, he decidedly ranted. … |
