… The makeup of Mr. Montgomery was splendid — it would have been difficult to have recognised that gentleman in the actor on the stage. Every point was carefully studied, and a more cruelly vindictive face than that which he presented to the audience, especially in the latter scenes, it would be difficult to conceive, and it could hardly be viewed without a shudder. In the dying scene his acting was most effective, and when carried off the stage after his sudden collapse he received perhaps a larger amount of applause than he has yet done in this city. … |
