…The story of the opera will need no recapitulation. It introduces, it will be remembered, some jovial characters, some pretty sentiment and much healthy comedy. Musically The Country Girl sparkles with some of Mr Lionel Monckton's happiest efforts. The cast is an adequate one, most of its members having had previous experience in more or less prominent stage roles. To Miss Florence Pacey was allotted the rather important part of Marjorie, and this she handled intelligently. Her acting rather lacked spontaneity, but she sang acceptably…. In the braoder comedy line the outstanding figure in The Country Girl is of course the irrepressible Barry. Mr G.C. Lyttleton undertook a heavy responsibility in essaying this part, but his success in it contributed very largely to that of the whole production. Without unnecessary buffoonery or exaggeration, Mr Lyttleton made excellent use of his opportunities and provided genuine comedy when on the stage. His feminine impersonation in the second act furnished special amusement, while quite in good taste…. |
