The grand historical play in five acts. Probably adapted from Walter Scott's novel Quentin Durward. …The applause that fell to Mr Sheridan's lot was deserved. His make-up was wonderful. The pallid, care-drawn face; cunning and revengeful mouth, now twitching with vindictiveness and now mumbling prayers; the leering and malignant eyes, at one time lit up with the fire of hate and at others gleaming with a simulated love; were all so cunningly pourtrayed (sic) that the effect was marvellous. Add to this the quavering voice— now unrestrainedly peevish, now vainly striving to be imperious — and the result was a whole deserving to be called perfect. … |
