…Mr Campion has mounted the play with a casual and disarming virtuosity. The play begins with light coming up on the dried skeleton of a tree placed befor the curtain, a swagman arrives and stands a moment rolling a cigarette, and singing the saga of Ned Kelly, the curtain rises, and we are in Jeriderie, in the bank the Kellys are about to raid. A heavy stillness radiates from the stage. The rawness and impermanence of life among dust, heat and flies is exquisitely conveyed by the sketchy interior. Outside, a plethoric woman crushed by the heat, lies in a heap on the rickety verandah, Cicads cackle, flies buzz and actors mop their faces. … |
