Description Elric Hooper says that the last period in which public and private dress clearly portrayed class was just before World War I. 'It was the last period when men carried … ceremonial swords.' Consequently, the production is set about 1913, and Pamela Maling has designed costumes reminiscent of those seen at the court of Czar Nicholas of Russia in the decade before the Communist Revolution. … Although it is not actually set in Russia, it is set in a very cold northern court with the feeling of an armed state. … 'The Edwardian period suits the play enormously well'.
