Deborah, a self-confessed bookbuyeraholic, joins a book club and in doing so changes her life only to have it become exactly what it was. Synopsis: Playmarket At middle age, Deborah's life with a workaholic lawyer husband and an empty nest lacks emotional fulfilment. A self-confessed 'book buyaholic', she finds intellectual stimulation from reading voraciously and fantasises about a romantic encounter with a writer like John Updike or, more recently, Martin Amis. When Debs invites a young author to a book club of women friends, the fantasy becomes reality - well, almost. As she pours out her guilt-tinged joy as the affair unfolds, we come to know something of her family and friends. Stereotypes they may largely be, but Hall is pretty secure dealing with middle-class angst and aspirations, foibles and frailties, particularly in women. (Star Times). |
