Description Tony Geddes' set of stripped bare, distressed grey walls intimated a mansion, palace or grand hotel denuded by war. The once fine but now disintegrating costumes suggest eastern Europe after World War I. Or Chekhov's Russia after the revolution….As a young woman plays the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, the players gather. They may be gypsy looters who have ransacked abandoned wardrobes in order to tell this ancient tale, or the dispossessed aristocracy themselves, about to play out their final acts of human degradation. Either way, this world is pagan, ruled by self-interest and already doomed….
