					| Description |
A semi-autobiographical play about the central character's attempts to come to terms with himself, his past and his identity as a New Zealander. The style is expressionistic. Synopsis: Playmarket Mervyn Thompson's Simon in First Return finds the straight way again by facing his daemons, his personal hell, and accepting thier existence as part of himself. Much of the power of the play results from a gradual association of Simon with New Zealand (it could be any post-colonial society); he becomes representative of a new society painfully accepting itself as less than heroic, but free, terrifyingly so.
