Description Inspired by George Seurat’s magnificent painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s soaring musical is itself an artistic masterpiece. One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, it won a Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist.

The 1884 painting looked like a stage set, Lapine observed, but was missing the main character.
“Who?” asked Sondheim. “The artist,” said Lapine.

Georges-Pierre Seurat was born in Paris in 1859 and died there in 1891. A Sunday on the Island of La Grande Jatte was his second major work and was begun in 1884, taking several years to complete. The painting is composed of thousands of tiny dots, a technique considered too radical in its day, even by the groundbreaking Impressionists. Sunday in the Park with George considers the creation of La Grande Jatte and its legacy.
