| Description |
The New Opera House, King-street, is to be converted into a store. It was erected by Kelly and Leon, and opened on Boxing Day, 1879, with 'The Doctor of Alcantara.' During its 21 years existence it has been tenanted by some fine artists, notably Signor and Mme. Majeroni, Jennie Lee, Frank Thornton, and the late Martin Simonsen's Italian-English Opera Company, which included Mme. Lilian Tree, Dimitresco, Pimazoni, and Mlle Lablache. It was herein that Mr. Harry Rickards tempted fortune for the last time, and won a big stake. |
