| Description |
“Believed to be among the first of its staged in Australia, the entertainment presented at the Waratah Deaf and Dumb Institution recently, revealed a triumph over adversity. For some time the deaf girls at the Institution have been studying the art of lip reading and speech artificially taught. […] The second part of the programme was devoted to a three-act play, 'Philumena,' acted in gestures by the deaf girls. A special feature of this clever scene was the memorisation of the passages by each youthful performer. The facial expressions and clever acting, together with the costumes and scenery, made a lasting impression.” |
