Private Hicks deals with a member of the American Civil Guard who refused to fire on unarmed strikers. Rehearsal by Albert Maltz won the 1938 prize for the best one-act play of the year in an American play competition. It is deeply psychological. On the stage of a Labour Theatre a rehearsal takes place of a fantasy (because the dead speak) recalling the 1932 motor industrial trouble.
