Extracts FROM THE COLONIAL JOURNALS |
| Abstract/Description |
Thursday Shakespeare's admirable play of the Merchant of Venice was performed in very excellent style by Mr. Cameron's company. the prominent character of Shylock was performed in a manner that would do credit to the late Cook himself, by a gentleman amateur performer (Mr Smee) and the great moral of the play cannot but have powerful influence in a place like this, where usury has been carried to a step beyond even Venetian Jew exaction.
The interesting part of Portia we need not say was delightfully filled by Mrs Cameron, who delivered the inimitable speech on mercy in the same and impressive manner, which characterised Miss O'Neill's performance. The shorties of time forbids us to comment on the performance of the other characters, but we must express out satisfaction at so excellent a representation of this classic model on the Hobart Town boards, which we trust will ensure the present very instructive play a repetition of many nights. |
