Title Royal Victoria Theatre
Abstract/Description The duties of a public writer under the most flattering auspices are any thing but an object of envy. Those unacquainted with the routine might consider it light and amusing ; let them try the experiment, and woeful experience will quickly undeceive them. 'Tis like the stone of Sysiphus— an endless repetition of toil. But what must be the feelings of that man who has brought the whole of his mental energies to the task, to be turned upon and informed that he was actuated by a motive, which, strange to say, must be at the same time a bad motive. Let any one— it is a matter of the most perfect indifference who - show the defects, by pointing out the dark side of the performance of an actor or actress, and it is set down to a malicious motive: on the other hand, write in their favour, and that is imputed to an interested motive; so that. .if a Journalist is weak enough to pay attention to these remarks, he is similarly situated with the old man and the ass in the fable, and in attempting to please every one, pleases no body, and gets laughed at for his imbecility.— We make the above remarks being aware of the bowlings and yellings of a considerable portion of the corps dramatique at our late remarks upon their " fustian," supposing that we were to succumb and truckle, to such as them. They will in the course of time find their mistake, and when by our structures they shall have become moulded and fashioned into what actors and actresses ought to be, we shall expect to receive their unqualified approbation. A temple has been erected worthy of the Drama, even in the " Queen of the South," and we shall most uncompromisingly and unsparingly use the lash upon those who either by their negligence, indelicacy, ignorance, or arrogance insult a too indulgent public. We are glad to see that Mr. Wyatt has taken our advice, and is gathering around him slowly the real dramatic talent of the Colony, without which his Theatre never could have prospered.
