Bagong Kussdiardjo, a dancer trained in the Yogyarkarta classical dance, is the founder of Indonesia's foremost modern dance company. As early as 1954, Bagong felt a need to express himself in means not available through traditional dance, so he decided to forge ahead with his desire for a more expressive non-conventional dance style. Bagong revolutionizes Indonesian dance by fusing both the traditional and modern elements, and his highly acclaimed provocative works have led to him being a "national treasure". |
