Description Ricordi! is a contemporary look at two of Katherine Mansfield's greatest stories, Prelude and At the Bay. It brings together two leading New Zealand artists, director Colin McColl and writer Peter Wells, in a major new work commissioned by the Festival. The stories, set in Wellington, revolve round the Burnells, a shadow play for Mansfield's own family. Yet behind her shimmering language and subtle symbols was a woman facing terminal illness, her rejection by her family, her own life of excess and rebellion. In her writing she finds peace. Ricordi was the single word DH Lawrence scrawled across a postcard when his ship docked in Wellington Harbour in 1922. The word means, approximately, memories. He had fallen out bitterly with Mansfield. But on seeing the hills and harbour of Wellington, he understood Katherine Mansfield, he remembered her and he sought to make peace with her.
