Description YESTERDAY, the interesting ceremony of opening the Sydney Exchange took place, and excited very large and general interest. Nearly the whole of the mercantile world of Sydney was present, and the attendance of his Excellency the Governor-General, the Heads of Departments, the Foreign Consuls, and the Officers of the 77th Regiment, rendered the scene an imposing and brilliant one. But a further attraction was imparted to the ceremony by a larger attendance of ladies than we ever remember to have seen collected together on the occasion of a public demonstration of any kind.

Further Information The ceremony of opening the Exchange would not have been complete without a festival, and no mode of rejoicing could have been so appropriate as a Ball. Commerce and festivity have ever been associated. Commerce is the handmaid of civilisation in its most perfect form, and festive rejoicing is among the chief distinguishing features of a high order of civilisation.
